A Voice for the Hurt

High school is supposed to be a fun, new, and exciting experience. The novel Speak is explains the life of a social outcast named Melinda and her struggles to fit in the high school. She doesn’t have any true friends seeing no one stayed around long enough to hear her story. This book was written by Laurie Halse Anderson and throughout the novel Melinda shows her emotional discomfort through actions, instead of speaking out. In the end she speaks up for herself and she finds a happier state of being.
In the beginning of the novel Melinda enters high school being shunned by all of her old friends. Even people she has never met before all because she called the cops at a party at the beginning of the summer. Melinda hides her feelings and doesn’t speak out about what really happened that night. Instead of speaking she silences herself by her actions. An example of this is how she constantly bites her lips. The fist example of this is right in the beginning of the
novel when Melinda’s ex best friend mouths “I hate you,” to her from across the room. Melinda bit her lip and tried not to think about it (Anderson 5). She continues to do this to remind herself to stay silent throughout the novel.
Melinda silences herself many other ways too. One of the most intense ways of this is when she cut herself with a paper clip. She says, “I open up the paper clip and scratch it across my left wrist. Pitiful. If suicide is a cry for help, then what is this? A whimper, a peep? (Anderson 65)”   When her mom sees the cuts all she says is that she doesn’t have time to deal with it. This shows how Melinda is trying to speak through cutting herself doesn’t help. Her mom doesn’t care. Her whimper for help is not heard.
At the end of the novel Melinda finds a happier state of being when she decides to finally talk. There are many factors that lead her to speak. Such as opening up to Mr. Freeman about what happened because “when people don’t express themselves, they die one piece at a time.” It was about time because now she could get past the party and move on with the rest of her life.

The Devil In Disguise

Losing sleep
Counting sheep
Closing eyes
Lullabies
I am losing sleep think about him
But why him you may ask?
I have no clue
But I am having flashbacks
Flashbacks to that one night
He rode his bike in my neighborhood to see me
Told me to look out my window
My stomach filled with butterflies
(I have obviously been eating too many of those)
But he was standing there
Underneath the street light
He looked like an angel with the light shining upon him
But he is far from that
I regret hesitating
My mind was thinking go
But there was a big red light flashing
DANGER DANGER
The red light was right
It was dangerous to go outside
Good thing I didn't
Because he could have pulled me into his trap
Like a magnet
He wasted my time
He's a devil in disguise
The only time I saw him was at night
In the storm
Lightning and thunder
Never in the light
Probably because if he was exposed to sunlight
It would be a starling sight to see
For he
Is the devil in disguise
:3 mehehehhhahahahahahaha!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Things Happen for a Reason

A cold November night
The air is frigid
And frosty is chilling her toes to the bone
The wind slides past her face
Numbing her ears and nose
She sits on the table
Waiting for their return
The seconds turn to minutes
And the minutes feel like hours
With misery storming through her mind
The flashbacks start
Her heart goes numb
And she is deprived of all hope
The dream of what they could have been
She drags herself home
With only the dim light
From the flickering street lights
She looks up to the stars
Hoping to find some sort of relief
A shooting star, something
But as her eyes gaze up higher and higher
The only thing she sees is clouds
She thinks to herself
"don’t cry now, wait, wait till you get inside"
Step by step she inches closer to warmth
This is the longest walk she has ever taken
Although in reality
She was only a block away
Only a few more steps
Until she can be safe at last
She stumbles onto the door  step
Takes a deep breath
And reaches for the door
Her finger tips touch the cold metal door knob
She takes a step inside and collapses on the ground
Curled up into a ball of comfort
She feels safe physically
But mentally, she's a mess
Tears cascade down her face
How could she fall for him?!
She is disgusted with herself
The pain pierces a hole through her chest
And her heart shatters
They say follow your heart
But when it is in so many pieces
Which way are you to go?

AbsolutleyUnattainable

Explaining why I like him
Is like explaining how water tastes
Its completely impossible
No matter which way I look at it
I don't know why I like him

Maybe it’s the way he makes me feel
Maybe it’s the way he makes me laugh
Maybe, just maybe
It's because
Everyone always wants what they can't have

My friends say he's horrible
And they advise me about him
But I just sit there feeling awkward
And no matter what they say
It is impossible for me to stop thinking about him.

They warn me he is only going to break my heart
Maybe so
I may be one of the dumbest people in the world
For simply falling for this guy
So in the end, explaining why I like him
Is like explaining how water tastes
Completely impossible.
