Letting go of the net, white, silk and strong, it captures the birds. Twenty-one to be exact, every dove gray-blue and plump as the next, except for one. There was a dove, white as snow, pure and dignified, but it escapes from the grasp of doom quickly, slides swiftly out of the net and fly’s away into the night. In the story “The Hundredth Dove” by Jane Yolen, the white bird wanted life and fought for it, but in the end the stupidity of the bird leads it to death.
When you fall into the loop of society and everyone is the same we lose our common sense, the sense of trying to escape from death. The birds, all gray and blue are the same and lost their sense of defining who they are so they fell into the pressure of being like everyone else. People that are different have the most power, or birds in the case of “The Hundredth Dove.” If you are different you know who you are, you have fun, and even when you get caught, life goes on. Even the seemingly perfect bird in the story had the stupidity to keep coming back to the clearing after it got caught in the net many times. Everything has rises and downfalls, it is a thing called life. You just have to fight for your chance at life, because others won’t fight for you like the bird. White and elegant it slipped from the net and got free many times because it fought for life and earned it.
With the white dove looking so pure and perfect, you would think that it would be very smart. It escaped from death five times before, being unlike the rest of the flock. With the simple features of the bird, it seems like it would automatically be the smartest. This bird could even speak. It was a bird sent from above and it gave the fowler opportunity to fame, fortune, gold, silver and even love. Hugh had given it some thought, but he serves the king. “SERVO.” and with a twist of the neck, the bird became motionless. This goes to prove that even things that seem perfect have their downfalls and go through pain just like the rest of us.
Hugh was given three chances and even though it was very tempting to leave the bird alone, with all the things she was telling him she would do for him, he kept the bird and killed it. The only thing that was giving him hope was dead. Already living in the forest away from society, no friends, no fortune, no nothing, Hugh underestimated the bird. When something seems so perfect, you can’t kill the hope because it’s the only thing you have. The bird had hope and realized that life is worth fighting for even though it may seem tough, there are still downfalls to the people that seem most perfect.

Even the Darkest Days Give Way to Day
When everything is coming at you
Giving you a difficult time
And nothing seems right
Just stay strong
Trudge through the darkness
And remember
Even the blackest nights
Must give way to day.
--------------------------------------------------------------------It's Better Now Because I'm Free
Someday I will fly away
Floating in my bubble of happiness
Pure serenity
Observing nature at its best
Slowly curving down that meandering dirt road
Nothing for miles except memories of the past
When my time comes
I'll be gone
But I'll be in a better place
Far beyond
I love you all
As you will soon see
It's better now
Because I'm free.

Quiet Whisper of the Heavens
Why does everyone assume I see two roads?
You insist I'm taking the hard one
Making my life more difficult
Taking the road that is twisting and turning my thoughts
And simply crashing my world into dust
Do you really think I asked for this?
Going through life day by day
With the miserable thoughts that race through my mind
And the quiet whisper of the heavens
Making me want that eternal peace more and more
