This is a song about transformation that shows a girl breaking free because she is sick of doing what other people expect of her.
When she comes to the realization that she can’t make everyone happy she thinks it would be nice to make herself happy for once. "All my life I've tried to make everybody happy while I just hurt and hide". That is how she truly feels, and she just wants to be happy. She has never been content doing what other people want, but she has never had the guts to say "Who cares if you disagree? You are not me! Who made you king of anything?". People tell her she isn't right, but she has her own beliefs. Who are you to tell someone that they aren't good enough? Because you aren't the ruler of their life. He thought he was always right, with every word he said but "let me hold your crown" because you need a rest. He tells her that she is wrong, but it is her life, she is in charge of her own life, so he shouldn't take something away from her that is rightfully hers in the first place. Sara states that he "sounds so innocent, all full of good intent, swear you know best" and this line is pointing out his arrogance thinking that he is always right. There is no way that anybody else knows what is best for you. He was "making masks with my name on it in all caps" almost as if he was ashamed of who she was, trying to make her someone she isn't and when she tries to tell him no, he tells her she is wrong. But she wasn't "the one who's lost with no direction". She knows exactly what she wants to do, but he is too busy taking control of everyone else's life that he has no clue what he wants.
She is breaking out of her shell so she can stop trying to please everyone because she wants to be happy for once in her life. She wants to be who she is and doesn’t want anyone to tell her she isn't good enough.
